The Pandesal Boys

Justin and Jordan

by: KC Romerosa

These names may sound familiar to you because they are names of a famous singer and a basketball player. However, this story is not about those famous people that we see on TV.  It is the tale of two children from Capitol Hills, Trece Martires City.

Jordan is 10 and Justin is 8. They are also known in the subdivision as the “Pan-de-sal boys” or boys who sell bread in the morning and in the afternoon around the said subdivision. At their young age they are forced to work because of poverty. They cannot even go to school because of their family situation. They both came from Bicol, where Jordan was able to attend school.  But when the family moved to Cavite, he was robbed of that privilege.

Yet God, in His infinite goodness, showed how much He loves these children. He showed Justin and Jordan the way to Lambat where they will come to know their Lord and Savior personally. At first, they would only peek on the windows whenever classes are going on. Until one day, our teachers asked them to join the class. They have shown nothing but eagerness and enthusiasm to learn.

During one of their classes, our teachers found out that these two boys are not capable of reading (Justin can’t even write). This prompted our teachers to help these children in a more special way. Teacher Ann and Teacher Aileen, volunteered to teach them how to  read and write.  They spend time teaching them every Tuesday and Thursday.   God is really good. He always meets the needs of His children as He met their need to learn.

Justin and Jordan are children who have the passion to learn. They easily grasp the things that their teachers taught them. Indeed, they are children worth fighting for. J
